Weekend Workshops

Intaglio Intensive 2
Saturday February 11 (10-4) and
Sunday February 12 (10-4)
Instructor: Loree Ovens
Cost: $170.00

This workshop will expand on the information delivered in Intaglio Intensive 1. Students are encouraged to further explore and combine techniques in monoprinting, drypoint, collagraph and embossing using a variety of plate materials. The “puzzle plate” (developed by instructor) and cut plate methods will also be introduced. The content of this course can be adapted for classroom use, and can form the basis for more intensive artistic explorations. Previous experience is helpful, though not required.

Alternative Screenprinting: The Relief Surface Print
Saturday March 3 (10-2),
Saturday March 10 (10-4) and
Sunday March 11 (10-2)

Instructor: Sandi Ralph
Cost: $175.00

Participants will experiment with a relief surface screenprinting technique that blends components of printmaking, painting and photography into a new form. A negative image will be screenprinted numerous times in absolute registration using only transparent base, to build up a relief surface on paper, essentially creating a colourless print. In a similar fashion to inking an etching plate, participants will then apply oil paint mixed with soft wax to the surface of their prints revealing transformed, unique, positive reading images. Previous screenprinting experience is helpful, but not necessary.

Japanese Paper Treatments for Artists & Printmakers
Saturday March 24 (10-4) and
Sunday March 25 (10-4)

Instructor: Loree Ovens
$180.00

This workshop will introduce basic techniques in using konnyaku, a plant based starch that can be applied to Japanese papers to provide added strength, durability and flexibility. Learn how to work with matte medium and resists to create image affects, and how to both flatten and wrinkle papers to create wonderful surfaces to stitch or turn into sculptural forms. Participants are encouraged to bring in small artworks created on Japanese paper with permanent materials (ie: not water-soluble) or other Japanese paper samples for experimentation. No experience required.
