The best way to work for me is to use material which I know well and which is close to me. That is how I choose my themes. The more concrete the beginning, the clearer the final result. "Real" objects and "real" views are the starting points, and - this is the idea - they retain their "being" in the final print. I think that the "idea of an apple" cannot be expressed without a "real" apple. I like appearances with a simple yet powerful charisma like stones, fruits and shadows. They didn't change their looks for millennia - they are archetypes of forms. In my work I feel connected to earlier generations of artists, technically as a creator of woodblock prints and intaglios as well as formally in in my work within timeless image themes like still life and landscape. I try to omit "unimportant" parts and to reveal the essences while reducing information - without killing off the vibrancy of the work. I try to achieve that by oscillating between simplicity and complexity, black-and-white and colour, abstraction and narration. Formally, I often work on variations of a compositional theme like a geometric form or a special ankle. |
